The Light Between Oceans Summary
The story is set on Janus Rock, a small island off the coast of Western Australia, in the early 1920s. Tom Sherbourne, a World War I veteran, is the island’s lighthouse keeper. He meets and falls in love with Isabel Graysmark, the daughter of the island’s doctor. They marry and start a family.
When their first child, a daughter, dies shortly after birth, Tom and Isabel are devastated. Not long afterward, a rowboat washes up on the shore of the island containing a dead man and a live baby. Tom and Isabel decide to raise the child as their own, naming her Lucy.
For years, they keep the truth about Lucy’s origins a secret. But as she grows older, Lucy begins to resemble her biological father more and more, raising questions in the minds of those around them. When the truth finally comes out, it has far-reaching and devastating consequences for all involved.
The Light Between Oceans is a beautifully written and emotionally gripping story about love, loss, and redemption. It explores the question of what it means to be a family, and how far we are willing to go to protect those we love.
