The book tells the story of two boys with the same name growing up in Baltimore in the 1980s. One is born to a drug-addicted mother and an absent father, while the other is raised by a middle-class family. Despite their similar backgrounds, the two boys’ lives take very different paths. One becomes a drug dealer and is sent to prison, while the other goes to college and becomes a Rhodes Scholar. The book asks the question of what factors led to each boy’s divergent path in life.

The story of The Other Wes Moore begins with the author, Wes Moore, telling the story of his namesake, another Baltimore native who grew up just a few miles away from him. Both Wes Moores was born in 1978 and both had absent fathers and drug-addicted mothers. However, that is where the similarities between the two end.

The author Wes Moore was raised by his paternal grandmother after his mother’s addiction to drugs became too much for her to handle. He excelled in school and was eventually accepted to Johns Hopkins University on a full scholarship.

The other Wes Moore, on the other hand, dropped out of high school and became a drug dealer. He was eventually arrested and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
