Kino is a poor pearl diver who lives in a small village in Mexico. He supports his wife, Juana, and their infant son, Coyotito, by diving for pearls. One day, Kino finds the “pearl of the world.” The pearl is enormous and is worth a fortune.

Kino’s life is changed by the pearl. He becomes obsessed with it and starts to believe that it will make him and his family rich. However, the pearl also brings Kino tragedy. His family is attacked by bandits and Coyotito is killed. Kino realizes that the pearl has only brought him misery and decides to get rid of it.

About the Author

John Steinbeck was an American author of 27 books, including 16 novels, six non-fiction books, and numerous short stories. He is widely known for the novel The Grapes of Wrath (1939), East of Eden (1952), and the novella Of Mice and Men (1937).

As the recipient of the 1962 Nobel Prize in Literature, Steinbeck is recognized as one of the greatest and most widely-read American writers of the 20th century.

Born on February 27, 1902, in Salinas, California, John Steinbeck grew up in a fertile agricultural valley about 25 miles from the coast. Both Steinbeck’s parents were schoolteachers. His father, John Ernst Steinbeck, served as Monterey County treasurer. His mother, Olive Hamilton Steinbeck, a former student of Stanford University, had been a schoolteacher and now worked as a stenographer and bookkeeper.

Of German, English, and Irish descent, Steinbeck was baptized a Catholic and later confirmed in the Episcopal Church. He would later adopt socialist and anti-war views. He attended Stanford University off and on between 1919 and 1925 but never received a degree.
