The book starts with Mary Lennox, a young English girl who lives with her parents in India. She is spoiled and has never been asked to do anything for herself. After the death of both of her parents from a cholera outbreak, she is sent to Yorkshire, England to live with her estranged uncle in Misselthwaite Manor.

Her uncle, Archibald Craven, is often away on business and leaving her in the care of his housekeeper Mrs. Medlock and strict governess Miss Mary. One day while exploring the grounds outside of the manor, Mary discovers an overgrown garden that has been locked up for many years. She is determined to uncover the mysteries of the secret garden and eventually discovers that her uncle had once had a beloved wife, Lily, who died shortly after giving birth to their son, Colin.
With the help of Martha Sowerby (the maid) and Dickon (Martha’s brother), Mary is able to restore the garden and bring it back to life. Through the process of restoring the garden, Mary finds friendship, joy, and a newfound purpose in her life.

About the Author
Frances Hodgson Burnett was an English-American novelist and playwright. She was born in 1849 in Cheetham, Manchester, England. Her father died when she was only five years old forcing her mother to move their family to Knoxville, Tennessee.
Here Burnett was exposed to the culture of the South, which provided great inspiration for her works later on. Burnett wrote her first successful novel Little Lord Fauntleroy at the age of 36 in 1886. On one hand, the novel was praised for its vivid characterization and beautiful prose, but on the other hand, it received criticism for its romanticized depictions of British Aristocracy.
She had many other works to her name such as A Little Princess (1905), The Secret Garden (1911), and Sara Crewe: or What Happened at Miss Minchin’s (1888). The Secret Garden is one of Burnett’s most well-known works, and it has been adapted into many different mediums such as films, musical theatre, television shows, and more.
