The Social Animal Summary

The book starts off by introducing us to Harold and Erica, two characters created by the author David Brooks. As we get to know them throughout their lives from teenage years onwards we come to see how their life choices affect not only their individual selves but also those around them.

We learn about the importance of emotional intelligence and the impact it has on decisions that shape our futures. And we see how important social relationships are in our lives, how they can shape us, and how we should be mindful of the impact that our actions have on others.

We look at the power of good communication, particularly in romantic relationships, and understand why resilience is so important when dealing with adversity. Throughout the story, we gain insights into the power of culture, and how it can both help and hinder our progress.
