About the Author

Tim O’Brien is an American novelist best known for his work in the Vietnam War. He was born on October 1, 1946, in Austin, Minnesota. After high school, O’Brien enlisted in the United States Army and served as a foot soldier in the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1970.

The Things They Carried

Following his return from Vietnam, O’Brien attended Macalester College on the GI Bill. He graduated in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in political science. O’Brien then attended graduate school at Harvard University, where he earned an M.A. in government in 1973.

O’Brien’s first novel, If I Die in a Combat Zone, Box Me Up and Ship Me Home, was published in 1973. The book is a memoir of O’Brien’s experiences in the Vietnam War. His second novel, Going After Cacciato, was published in 1978 and won the National Book Award for Fiction.
