About the Author
Eric Carle is an American writer and illustrator of children’s books. He is most noted for The Very Hungry Caterpillar, a book that has been translated into more than 66 languages and sold more than 50 million copies.
Carle was born in Syracuse, New York, on June 25, 1929. When he was six years old, his family moved to Germany, and he grew up during World War II. In an interview with Denise Chapman Weston for Biography, Carle recalled: “I had a happy childhood in Germany. I remember the war only vaguely. Of course, we knew it was going on, but it didn’t come into our lives very much.”
Carle’s father, Josef Carle, was a supervisor in a shoe factory, and his mother, Johanna Carle (née Müller), was a homemaker. His parents were “strict Catholics” who emphasized the importance of hard work and education. As a child, Carle enjoyed drawing and listening to his grandmother’s stories. When he was seven years old, his father died of diabetes mellitus.
After the war, Carle and his mother moved back to the United States, settling in New York City. Carle attended high school at The High School of Music & Art (now Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School) and graduated in 1947.
