Women Don’t Owe You Pretty Summary

The book starts with a story about a girl who is constantly told she’s not pretty enough. She grows up believing that her worth is based on her looks and she’ll never be good enough. As she gets older, she realizes that this isn’t true. She starts to love herself for who she is, not what she looks like.

The book then goes into detail about how our society is obsessed with beauty and how it’s used to control women. It discusses how the media tells us what we should look like and how we should behave. It also covers topics such as dieting, body shaming, and photoshop. The book ends with some advice on how to love yourself and accept your imperfections.

I found this book to be incredibly empowering. It was refreshing to read something that wasn’t telling me how I should look or behave. Instead, it encouraged me to love myself for who I am. I would highly recommend this book to any woman who is struggling with self-esteem or body image issues.

About the Author

Florence Given is a 20-year-old British student, artist, and writer. She is currently studying for her BA in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins. Given’s work is largely concerned with exploring the female experience, and she is particularly interested in how society tells women to behave.

Women Don't Owe You Pretty

Florence Given was born in Harrow, London. When she was younger, her family moved around a lot due to her father’s job. This meant that Given had to change schools frequently, which made it difficult for her to make and keep friends. As a result, she became quite introverted and spent a lot of time reading and writing.

Given has always been interested in art and feminism. When she was 16, she started a blog called “The Feministing Teen” which covered topics such as body image, sexuality, and gender equality. After finishing her A-Levels, Given took a gap year in which she volunteered at a women’s refuge and interned at a feminist magazine. She also spent time traveling, and it was during this trip to India that she had the idea for her book, Women Don’t Owe You Pretty.

Given self-published Women Don’t Owe You Pretty in March 2019. The book has been described as a “manifesto for unapologetic womanhood” and has been praised for its intersectional approach to feminism. Given has said that she wrote the book in order to start a conversation about the Pressure girls faces to conform to society’s standards of beauty.
