Foundation Summary

The book begins with the fall of the Galactic Empire. The emperor had been dying for some time, and his son, who was to be the next emperor, was not competent. As a result, the empire was in disarray and on the verge of collapse.

One man, Hari Seldon, saw what was happening and devised a plan to save civilization. Seldon developed a science called psychohistory, which could predict the future of large groups of people. He used this knowledge to develop a plan to save civilization.

Seldon realized that the fall of the empire was inevitable and that it would take centuries for civilization to recover. In order to shorten this time period, he created the Foundation, a group of people who would preserve and advance knowledge. The Foundation would serve as a “seed” from which a new civilization would grow.
