He is captured and put in a cage where he eventually earns the trust of the Lilliputians and is able to help them in their war against their rivals, the Blefuscu.

On his second voyage, Gulliver ends up in Brobdingnag, a land inhabited by giants. He is again captured and put on display as a freak show. Although he is initially treated poorly, Gulliver eventually earns the respect of the Brobdingnagians and is able to teach them about the outside world.

On his third voyage, Gulliver lands in Laputa, a flying island ruled by scientists and philosophers who are so obsessed with their work that they have no time for anything else. Gulliver is able to help the Laputans develop a more balanced approach to life and learn to enjoy the simple things.

Jonathan Swift was born in Dublin, Ireland on 30 November 1667. He was the second child and only son of Abigail Erick (née Herrick), a prosperous merchant’s daughter, and Jonathan Swift Sr., a successful banker.

Gulliver's Travels

His father died seven months before he was born. He went to Kilkenny College where he met William Congreve and Alexander Pope, both of whom would become significant figures in his life. He then attended Trinity College, Dublin, where he was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1686 and a Master of Arts degree in 1692. In 1694, he met Esther Johnson (known as “Stella”) who would become the love of his life.

Swift left Ireland for England in 1696 and became a secretary to Sir William Temple, a diplomat at Moor Park, Farnham. This gave him time to write. In 1699, he published his first major work, “A Tale of a Tub”. He was ordained as a priest in the Church of Ireland in 1701.

In 1702, he became Temple’s personal secretary and began work on his most famous work, “Gulliver’s Travels”. The first part was published in 1726 and caused great controversy. In the second part, Gulliver visits the flying island of Laputa and the country of Houyhnhnms.
