About the Author

Asad Durrani is a retired Pakistani Army general who served as the Director General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Pakistan’s premier intelligence agency, from 1990 to 1992. He was born on 19 November 1947 in Karachi, Pakistan. He comes from a middle-class family of Pashtun background. Durrani’s father was an employee of the Pakistani consulate in Kabul.

Durrani joined the Army in 1965 and was commissioned into the 16 Baloch Regiment. He participated in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 as a company commander. Following the war, he attended the Command and Staff College in Quetta. He later attended the National Defence University in Islamabad.

Durrani’s first posting after completing his studies was as a company commander in Gilgit. He later served as a battalion commander in Swat and as a brigade commander in Multan.

In 1985, Durrani was posted to ISI as a deputy director. He was promoted to the rank of major general in 1987 and appointed as the deputy chief of ISI. In 1990, he was appointed as the Director General of ISI by then-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
