Iain Reid was born in Ottawa, Ontario, and grew up in the small town of Almonte. He studied philosophy at Queen’s University. After graduation, he worked as a filmmaker, producing short films that have screened at festivals around the world. He lives in Toronto.

I’m Thinking of Ending Things is Reid’s first novel. It was inspired by an experience he had while working as a filmmaker. He was driving to a shoot in the middle of winter, and he began to worry that he might die in a car accident. This led him to think about what would happen if he disappeared and his body was never found.

In an interview with The Globe and Mail, Reid said that he wanted to write a book that would make readers “uncomfortable in a good way.” He said that he was influenced by the works of Kafka, Beckett, and Shirley Jackson.
