The Partner Summary

At the start of the story, Patrick has embezzled $90 million from his law firm and faked his own death in a car crash, leaving behind his burnt remains in the wreckage. He then travels to Brazil to start a new life with the stolen money.

Four years later, Patrick’s past catches up with him when his former law partners discover that he is still alive and hiding in Brazil. They hire a private investigator to track him down and bring him back to the United States to face justice for his crimes. Patrick is eventually captured and extradited to the United States, where he is put on trial for embezzlement and other crimes.

Throughout the trial, Patrick’s past and the events that led up to his embezzlement are revealed through a series of flashbacks. It is revealed that Patrick had been deeply unhappy with his life and career as a lawyer, and had grown tired of the constant pressure to generate profits for the law firm. He had also been in a relationship with a woman named Eva, who had been diagnosed with cancer and required expensive medical treatment.

The main characters of “The Partner” by John Grisham are:

  • Patrick Lanigan – the protagonist of the story, a former lawyer who fakes his death and steals $90 million from his law firm.
  • Eva Miranda – Patrick’s former lover and partner at the law firm who helps him fake his death and escape with the stolen money.
  • Mattiece – a wealthy businessman who hires Patrick to work for him under an assumed identity, but has his own agenda for doing so.
  • Zachary Devine – a private investigator hired by the law firm to find Patrick and recover the stolen money.
  • FBI Agent Terrance Levi – an FBI agent who investigates the theft and pursues Patrick across the globe.
  • Omar – a hired assassin sent to kill Patrick by his former law partners.

These characters drive the plot of the story as Patrick tries to evade his pursuers and hold onto the stolen money while facing the consequences of his past actions.

“The Partner” by John Grisham was adapted into a made-for-TV movie in 1997. The movie was directed by Robert Dornhelm and starred Joey Lawrence as Patrick Lanigan, Chris O’Donnell as FBI Agent Terrance Levi, and Daphne Zuniga as Eva Miranda.

The movie follows the same basic plot as the book, with Lanigan faking his death and stealing millions of dollars from his law firm, and subsequently being pursued by his former colleagues, the FBI, and a hired assassin. However, the movie made some changes to the plot and characters and received mixed reviews from critics.

It spent several weeks at the top of the New York Times bestseller list and has since sold millions of copies worldwide. Many readers and critics praised the book for its suspenseful plot, well-drawn characters, and expertly crafted twists and turns.

However, some critics felt that the book was somewhat formulaic and predictable and that it did not offer any significant departures from Grisham’s previous legal thrillers. Additionally, some readers found the main character, Patrick Lanigan, to be unlikable and difficult to root for.
