The book was adapted to a film of the same name in 2007, directed by Sean Penn.
The book is a biographical account of Christopher McCandless, a young man who ventured into the Alaskan wilderness in April 1992, at the age of 24, and died there in August. The book follows McCandless’s travels through the United States and ultimately into the Alaskan wilderness, where he died of starvation.
The book has received widespread critical acclaim and has been a bestseller. Reviewers have praised Krakauer’s writing style and the book’s powerful depiction of McCandless’s journey.
Some of the themes of the book include the search for meaning and purpose in life, the dangers of idealism and nonconformity, and the power of nature. It also examines the relationship between fathers and sons, and the dangers of blindly pursuing one’s dreams without considering the consequences.

Into the Wild Summary
The first part of the book traces McCandless’s travels through the United States in the years leading up to his trip to Alaska. He was a talented and intelligent young man, but he had a strained relationship with his parents and felt disillusioned with the direction his life was taking. McCandless dropped out of college and began traveling, using a false identity and cutting off all contact with his family and friends.
The second part of the book details McCandless’s journey to Alaska. He hitchhiked and traveled by train, eventually making his way to the Stampede Trail, a remote wilderness area in the state. McCandless set up camp near the trail and spent the next four months living off the land, hunting and foraging for food.
The third part of the book discusses the discovery of McCandless’s remains and the investigation into his death. Krakauer also explores the possible causes of McCandless’s death, including starvation and exposure. The final part of the book is a reflection by Krakauer on the broader meaning of McCandless’s story.
