About the Author

Bill Bryson is a best-selling author and travel writer. He was born in Iowa in 1951 and grew up in Des Moines. He attended Drake University but dropped out after one semester.

A Walk In The Woods

Bryson moved to England in 1973 and lived there for 20 years. While living in England, he worked as a journalist for The Times and The Independent. He also wrote several travel books, including The Lost Continent and Notes from a Small Island. In 1995, he moved back to the United States and now lives in New Hampshire with his wife and two sons. In addition to A Walk in the Woods, Bryson has also written books about science, history, and the English language.

A Walk in the Woods is Bryson’s first book about his native country and is based on his own experience of hiking the Appalachian Trail. In an interview, Bryson said that he wrote the book “to try and convey what an extraordinary place America is.”

Bryson is also a member of the Conservation Board of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. In 2010, he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters by Drake University.
