The book follows Alaska’s life from when she is a teenager until the end of her senior year in high school.
The novel begins with Miles “Pudge” Halter enrolling at Culver Creek Preparatory School in Alabama at the urging of his best friend, Chip “The Colonel” Martin. Pudge is excited to leave behind his boring life in Florida and start anew at Culver Creek.
Pudge quickly becomes friends with Alaska and her roommate, Takumi. The three of them spend their days smoking cigarettes, pulling pranks, and generally causing mischief.
Alaska is wild and unpredictable, and Pudge is instantly drawn to her. He begins to fall in love with her, even though he knows she is dating someone else.
Tragedy strikes when Alaska is killed in a car accident. Pudge is devastated by her death and starts to question everything he believed in.
With the help of his friends, Pudge slowly starts to piece his life back together. He comes to realize that Alaska would want him to live life to the fullest and not take anything for granted.
