About the Author

Admiral William H. McRaven is a retired United States Navy four-star admiral who served as the commander of the U.S. Special Operations Command from August 8, 2011, to August 28, 2014. As SOCOM commander, he oversaw the special operations forces of all branches of the U.S. military.

Make Your Bed

Prior to his assignment as SOCOM commander, McRaven served as the commander of Joint Special Operations Command from June 2009 to August 2011. In this role, he was responsible for the organization, training, and equipping of all U.S. special operations forces.

McRaven is a 1977 graduate of the United States Naval Academy. He has commanded at every level in the Navy SEAL community and has served in some of the most dangerous places in the world.

During his 37 years in the Navy, McRaven held numerous command and leadership positions, including the commander of SEAL Team 3; the commander of the Naval Special Warfare Center; and the commander of the Joint Special Operations Command.
