About the Author

Bobby Fischer was an American chess player, considered one of the greatest chess players of all time. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 9, 1943, and began playing chess at a young age. He quickly developed a reputation as a prodigy, and by the time he was 13, he had become the youngest player ever to win the United States Junior Chess Championship.

My 60 Memorable Games

Fischer continued to dominate the chess world in his teens and early twenties, winning the United States Chess Championship eight times in a row and becoming the youngest player ever to qualify for the World Chess Championship Candidates tournament. In 1972, at the age of 29, he became the World Chess Champion by defeating Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union in a match that was widely seen as a Cold War-era showdown.

Fischer was known for his unorthodox playing style and his aggressive and unorthodox openings. He was also known for his volatile personality and his tendency to make controversial statements. He was highly critical of the chess establishment and had a number of public feuds with other chess players and organizations.

In 1975, Fischer refused to defend his World Champion title, and the title was forfeited to Anatoly Karpov. Fischer then retired from competitive chess and largely disappeared from the public eye. He returned to the game in 1992, to play a rematch against Spassky, but his behavior became increasingly erratic, and he was eventually arrested by the U.S. government for violating sanctions against Yugoslavia by playing a match there. He lived in Hungary, the Philippines, and Iceland before his death on January 17, 2008.
