About the Author
She was born in Washington, D.C. on July 2, 1919, and grew up in New York City. She attended Pennsylvania State University, where she studied art and science.
After college, she worked as a journalist for The New York Times and as an editor for McCall’s magazine. In the 1950s, she began writing children’s books. Her first book, My Side of the Mountain, was published in 1959 and won the Newbery Honor in 1960.
George continued to write prolifically throughout her career, publishing over 100 books in her lifetime. In addition to My Side of the Mountain, she is also known for her books Julie of the Wolves and The Talking Earth. She died on May 15, 2012, at the age of 92.
In an interview, George once said, “I think that the love of nature is a strain that runs through all my books.” This love of nature is evident in her writing, which often explores themes of environmentalism and conservation. My Side of the Mountain is a classic example of George’s unique brand of eco-fiction, chronicling the adventures of a young boy who runs away from home to live in the Catskill Mountains.
