Shadow of Victory Summary

The book starts with a prologue that recalls the events of the previous book, On Basilisk Station. The Star Kingdom of Manticore has been attacked by the people’s Republic of Haven, and the Royal Manticoran Navy (RMN) is struggling to defend itself.

In the meantime, Honor Harrington, commanding officer of HMS Nike, is ordered to take her ship to the planet Sphinx to help with the defense of the Star Kingdom. Nike is part of a flotilla of ships that is dispatched to defend Sphinx, which is under attack by Havenite forces.

Nike and the other ships in the flotilla are successful in repelling the Havenite attackers, but Sphinx is left heavily damaged. Harrington and her crew return to Manticore, where they are hailed as heroes.

About the Author

David Weber is an American science fiction and fantasy author. He has written in the military science fiction, space opera, and epic fantasy genres, among others. His best-known works include his Honorverse and Safehold series.

Shadow of Victory

Weber began writing science fiction at the age of 12, before going on to study history at the United States Naval Academy from which he graduated in 1979. He became a full-time author in 1982 and began working on the Honorverse series the following year with the novel On Basilisk Station.

This series would go on to become his most well-known work, chronicling the adventures of Honor Harrington, a female officer in the Royal Manticoran Navy. To date, Weber has written 17 Honorverse novels, as well as numerous short stories and spin-off works. He has also written in other series and universes, including the Safehold series and the War World anthology series.

In addition to his writing work, Weber served as an editor of the science fiction magazine Challenge from 1984 to 1987 and has been a guest lecturer at the United States Naval Academy and the United States Military Academy. He is an active member of Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America and served as the organization’s president from 1999 to 2001.
