Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde Summary
The novel is narrated by Mr. Utterson, a lawyer and close friend of Dr. Henry Jekyll. Mr. Utterson is bothered by his friend’s secretive behavior and the strange association between Jekyll and the evil Mr. Edward Hyde.
One evening, Utterson goes for a walk with his cousin, Mr. Enfield. Enfield tells a story of witnessing Hyde trample a young girl. Hyde had offered to pay Enfield an enormous sum of money to keep quiet, but Enfield refused. Later, Utterson has dinner with Jekyll. Jekyll seems troubled and says that he has important business to attend to. He also mentions that he has made arrangements in case of his death or disappearance.
That night, Utterson has a dream in which he sees Hyde enter Jekyll’s laboratory. In the morning, he goes to Jekyll’s house but finds that Hyde has already been there. He looks through the keyhole and sees Hyde transform back into Jekyll.

About the Author
Robert Louis Stevenson was a Scottish novelist, short story writer, and essayist. His most famous works are Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. He was a literary celebrity during his lifetime and now ranks as the 26th most translated author in the world.
Stevenson was born on 13 November 1850 in Edinburgh, Scotland, to Thomas Stevenson (1818–87), a lighthouse engineer, and Margaret Isabella Balfour (1829–97). He was sickly as a child, and bedridden for long periods. During these times he developed his love for stories and literature. His father’s cousin, Robert Alan Mowbray Stevenson, taught him Latin and saved many of Stevenson’s early writings.
When Stevenson was 18, he went to Edinburgh University to study engineering, but he soon became more interested in literature, publishing articles and essays in the student magazine Papyrus. He also became friends with fellow student W. E. Henley, who would later become a successful poet and novelist. Stevenson left university without graduating in 1875.
