The Sound and the Fury PDF is a novel written by American author William Faulkner. It was published in 1929 by Jonathan Cape & Harrison Smith in the United States, and Chatto & Windus in the United Kingdom.

It explores the lives of the Compson family, a once-proud Southern family from Mississippi, who are struggling with financial ruin, emotional damage, and mental illness. The Sound and the Fury was Faulkner’s fourth novel and was not an immediate success.

In fact, it received mixed reviews upon publication and sold relatively few copies. However, the novel has since gone on to become one of Faulkner’s most famous and well-regarded works and is considered by many to be one of the greatest novels of the 20th century. It is available here in multiple formats including Kindle, Paperback, and Hardcover.

The Sound and the Fury Summary

The book is set in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi, in the early 20th century. The story is narrated by three different characters: Benjy Compson, Quentin Compson, and Jason Compson III.

Benjy, a mentally handicapped 33-year-old man, is the first narrator. The section of the book that Benjy narrates is characterized by a lack of traditional punctuation and syntax, which is meant to convey the stream-of-consciousness thoughts that run through his mind. The second narrator is Quentin, Benjy’s 23-year-old brother. Quentin’s section is significantly shorter than Benjy’s and is told from the perspective of a man on the brink of suicide.

The final narrator is Jason, the brothers’ 45-year-old first cousin. Jason is a cynical, money-hungry man who is determined to get his hands on the Compson family fortune. His section of the book is told in a more traditional, third-person limited point of view.
