The Blue Umbrella Summary
The book starts with a brief description of the mountain village of Shimla, India. Binya is a young girl who lives there with her parents and grandmother. Even though she can’t afford to buy it, she decides to save up her money so that she can one day purchase the umbrella.

About the Author
Ruskin Bond (born 19 May 1934) is an Indian author of British descent. He was born in Kasauli (Himachal Pradesh) and grew up in Shimla, Mussoorie, Dehradun, and New Delhi. His first novel, The Room on the Roof, written when he was seventeen, received the John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize in 1957. Since then he has written over 500 short stories, essays, and novellas, and more than 40 books for children.
Bond’s works are simple and lyrical, often depicting the bucolic life in the Himalayan region as well as the urban middle-class life in contemporary India. They do not shy away from depicting the harsher realities of life as well, such as poverty, prejudice, and violence. His writings often have a nostalgic quality to them, recalling childhood memories and the simplicity of life in small towns.
Bond has been awarded several prestigious prizes, including the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1992 for Our Trees Still Grow in Dehra, the Padma Bhushan in 1999, and the Delhi government’s Sahitya Akademi Award in 2012. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by Pune International Literary Festival in 2013. In 2014, he was given the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts award.
