The Blue Umbrella Summary

The book starts with a brief description of the mountain village of Shimla, India. Binya is a young girl who lives there with her parents and grandmother. One day, she comes across a beautiful blue umbrella in a shop window and immediately falls in love with it. Even though she can’t afford to buy it, she decides to save up her money so that she can one day purchase the umbrella.

Binya is overjoyed when she finally has enough money to buy the umbrella, but her happiness is short-lived when she accidentally drops it and damages it. She tries to repair the umbrella but is unsuccessful. Finally, she decides to take it back to the shop where she bought it and ask for a refund.

The shopkeeper, however, is not willing to give her a refund. He instead offers to trade the umbrella for Binya’s red scarf, which she is very reluctant to part with. After much deliberation, Binya decides to accept the trade and goes home with the blue umbrella.
