About the Author
Don Norman is an American cognitive scientist, design consultant, professor, and author. He is the co-founder of the Nielsen Norman Group and a recipient of the National Medal of Technology.
Norman was born in 1935 in San Francisco. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he attended Stanford University, where he received his B.A. in mathematics (1957), M.S. in mathematical statistics (1959), and Ph.D. in psychology (1964). His dissertation research was on human information processing.
Norman began his teaching career at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he was a founding member of the Cognitive Science Department. He then moved to the University of California, San Diego, where he is currently a professor of cognitive science and director of the Design Lab. He has also been a visiting professor at Stanford University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Northwestern University.
Norman’s research focuses on human-centered design, particularly how people interact with technology. He is the author of several books on the subject, including The Design of Everyday Things (1988) and Emotional Design (2004).
