The Enemy Summary
The book begins with Reacher arriving in Northeastern Virginia, where he finds out that the army is investigating the murder of a two-star general that occurred sixteen years ago. The general was Reacher’s boss when he was still in the army.
As Reacher starts to investigate the case, he begins to uncover a web of secrets and lies that the army is trying to keep hidden. He learns that the general was investigating a stolen weapon when he was killed, and the weapon has still not been found. Reacher also discovers that the general’s wife, who was a promising army officer at the time, was also involved in the investigation and has since disappeared.
Reacher decides to find out what really happened to the general and the missing weapon. He meets with some of his former colleagues and starts to piece together the events leading up to the murder. He discovers that the weapon was part of a larger conspiracy involving a rogue group of army officers who were planning a coup against the government. The general had been investigating this group and was killed to keep him quiet.
As Reacher gets closer to the truth, he becomes a target of the rogue army officers who want to eliminate him before he can expose their plan. Reacher fights back and manages to take down the group, but not without suffering some serious injuries in the process. In the end, justice is served, and the missing weapon is recovered.
