The Gifts of Imperfection Summary

The book starts with a quote from Theodore Roosevelt, “The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena…”

Brene then asks us to imagine that everyone is an artist. We are each painting a self-portrait throughout our lives. And sometimes we think about our audience too much or get caught up in perfectionism and the result is a subpar work of art.

The book is divided into ten guideposts with essays in between each one. The first guidepost is “Courage”. It takes courage to be vulnerable and to let ourselves be seen for who we are, imperfections and all. Courage also allows us to be truthful and to live with integrity. It is the foundation for everything else.

The second guidepost is “Compassion”. We need to be kind to ourselves first and foremost. We are all just doing the best we can. Once we have compassion for ourselves, we can extend it outward to others.
