Arundhati Roy is an Indian author best known for her novel The God of Small Things, which won the Booker Prize in 1997.

The God of Small Things

Roy was born in Shillong, Meghalaya, India, to Mary Roy, a Malayali Syrian Christian women’s rights activist from Kerala, and Rajib Roy, a Bengali Hindu tea plantation manager from Calcutta. Roy is the niece of filmmaker Buddhadeb Dasgupta and sister of film producer Sanjay Roy.

She attended school in Aymanam, a village in Kerala, and then Delhi University, where she studied architecture. She worked briefly as an architect before moving to Mumbai to become a screenwriter.

Her first novel, The God of Small Things, was published in 1997 and won the Booker Prize. The book is set in Kerala and follows the lives of Rahel and Estha, fraternal twins whose lives are disrupted by the death of their mother, Sophie Mol.
