About the Author

Joseph Conrad was a Polish-British writer who is best known for his novels and short stories. He was born in 1857 in what is now Ukraine.

Heart of Darkness

Conrad’s parents died when he was young, and he was raised by his uncle. He left home at the age of 16 to join the merchant marine. Conrad served in the merchant marine for nearly 20 years, during which time he sailed around the world.

In 1894, Conrad began writing his first novel, Almayer’s Folly. His other novels include Lord Jim, Nostromo, and The Secret Agent. Conrad died in 1924 at the age of 66. His work continues to be widely read and studied.

In an interview, Conrad once said, “My task which I am trying to achieve is, by the power of the written word, to make you hear, to make you feel—it is, before all, to make you see. That—and no more, and it is everything.” These words ring true in his classic novel Heart of Darkness.
