The Goldfinch Summary

The book starts with the protagonist, 13-year-old Theo Decker, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. He is there with his mother when she is killed in a terrorist bombing. In the aftermath of the tragedy, Theo walks away from the scene with a small painting called The Goldfinch. This act of thievery sets the tone for the rest of the book, which is full of crime, deceit, and addiction.

Theo eventually moves in with a wealthy family friend, Mrs. Barbour, and her daughter Pippa. He attends an elite private school on scholarship, but he struggles to fit in. His only solace is found in art and his love for the small painting that he stole. When Mrs. Barbour dies unexpectedly, Theo is forced to move in with his deadbeat father and his girlfriend, Xandra.

Theo’s father is an abusive drunk, and Xandra is a neglectful drug addict. Theo turns to drugs and alcohol to numb the pain of his home life. He also becomes involved in the art world, and he meets a man named Boris, who introduces him to the criminal underworld of art dealing. Theo gets caught up in Boris’ scheme to sell a forgery of The Goldfinch, and he is arrested.
