The Inheritance of Loss Summary
The novel begins with the arrival of a new cook, named Biju, who has just returned from New York City. Biju is the son of Sai’s tutor, and he left India to seek better opportunities in America. However, his life in America has not been as he had hoped and he returns to India to find that his father has passed away.
As the story progresses, Jemubhai’s past is revealed through a series of flashbacks. We learn that he was educated in England and suffered from racism and discrimination while living there. This has led him to become bitter and isolated, which has caused him to become estranged from his son, who lives in the United States.
Meanwhile, Sai falls in love with her tutor, Gyan, who is also involved in a political movement that is seeking to gain independence for their region. The relationship between Sai and Gyan is complicated by their different backgrounds and the political turmoil that surrounds them.
As the novel draws to a close, a group of Nepali insurgents attacks the town, causing chaos and destruction. The violence that ensues brings the characters’ struggles to a climax, forcing them to confront their own identities and the role they play in the world.
