The Partner Summary

At the start of the story, Patrick has embezzled $90 million from his law firm and faked his own death in a car crash, leaving behind his burnt remains in the wreckage. He then travels to Brazil to start a new life with the stolen money.

Four years later, Patrick’s past catches up with him when his former law partners discover that he is still alive and hiding in Brazil. They hire a private investigator to track him down and bring him back to the United States to face justice for his crimes. Patrick is eventually captured and extradited to the United States, where he is put on trial for embezzlement and other crimes.

Throughout the trial, Patrick’s past and the events that led up to his embezzlement are revealed through a series of flashbacks. It is revealed that Patrick had been deeply unhappy with his life and career as a lawyer, and had grown tired of the constant pressure to generate profits for the law firm. He had also been in a relationship with a woman named Eva, who had been diagnosed with cancer and required expensive medical treatment.
