About the Author
Nathaniel Branden, Ph.D., is a Canadian-American psychologist and author who specializes in the psychology of self-esteem. He is best known for his work in the field of Object Relations Theory.
Branden was born on April 9, 1930, in Brampton, Ontario. His parents, Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe, ran a small grocery store. As a child, Branden suffered from asthma and was often sick. He was also shy and had trouble making friends.
In 1948, at the age of 18, Branden moved to the United States to study psychology at New York University. He received his Ph.D. in psychology from UCLA in 1962. Branden’s work in the field of self-esteem began with his book, The Psychology of Self-Esteem (1969). In this book, he argued that self-esteem is a critical factor in human happiness and success.
Branden has written several other books on the topic of self-esteem, including The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem (1994) and Take the Risk: Learning to Identify, Choose, and Live with Acceptable Risks (1996). He has also written extensively on the philosophy of Objectivism, a system of thought founded by writer Ayn Rand.
