The book is set in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi, in the early 20th century. The story is narrated by three different characters: Benjy Compson, Quentin Compson, and Jason Compson III.
Benjy, a mentally handicapped 33-year-old man, is the first narrator.
