Three Day Road Summary
The novel explores the effects of World War I on two Canadian First Nations men, Xavier Bird and Elijah Weesageechak, who enlist as snipers. It is told through the eyes of Niska, Xavier’s Cree grandmother and medicine woman, who has visions of her grandson’s wartime experiences.
Niska lives in a remote cabin in the woods near the fictional town of Moosonee, Ontario. She is visited by her granddaughter, Elizabeth, who has come to ask Niska to help her dying father, Xavier. Niska agrees and sets off on a three-day journey by canoe to reach Xavier’s bedside.
Xavier is a veteran of the Great War and is suffering from shell shock. He is haunted by memories of his time as a sniper and the things he was forced to do in order to survive. Elijah, Xavier’s best friend, and fellow sniper is also struggling with the aftermath of the war. He has lost his legs and is dealing with intense survivor’s guilt.
Niska tries to help her grandson and his friend heal by teaching them the Cree way of life. However, she soon realizes that their wounds are too deep to be healed by anything but time.
