About the Author
Ivan Doig was an American author known for his novels and non-fiction works set in the American West. Doig earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from Northwestern University and a Ph.D. in American history from the University of Washington.

It is a novel by Ivan Doig that tells the story of eleven-year-old Donal Cameron, who lives in Montana with his guardian, Aunt Kate. When Aunt Kate has to have surgery, she sends Donal on a bus trip to Wisconsin to stay with his grandmother, known as Gram, for the summer.
Donal is excited about the adventure but things don’t go smoothly. His bus driver, Herman the German, is a gruff and unfriendly man who doesn’t seem to like kids. Donal also loses his suitcase and is forced to wear his aunt’s old clothes.
