About the Author

Margaret Mitchell was an American author and journalist. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, she began writing at a young age and wrote extensively during her lifetime including the novel Gone with the Wind for which she won the Pulitzer Prize.

He start his career in journalism and later worked for the Atlanta Journal. Mitchell wrote her only novel, Gone with the Wind during her spare time while working for the newspaper. His work was first published in 1936 and became an instant bestseller. The book was adapted into a movie in 1939, starring Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable, which went on to win eight Academy Awards. Mitchell died at the age of 48 in 1949.

In an interview with The Paris Review, she was asked about her writing process and schedule. Mitchell replied: “I wrote in longhand on legal-sized pads, which I carried with me everywhere I went. I wrote in bed, at the kitchen table, in the car…wherever I happened to be when inspiration struck”. When asked how long it took her to write the novel, she said: “Ten years— off and on. I wrote in snatches, whenever I could snatch a few minutes”.
