The novel follows the story of John Smith, an alien from the planet Lorien who must find others like him before the enemy finds and kills them. John is one of nine children with special powers sent to Earth to escape the enemy. He has the ability to create fire and manipulate it.
The book opens with John living in Ohio under the assumed name of Mike O’Donnell. He has just turned fifteen and is starting to come into his powers.
