Smaller and Smaller Circles Summary

The book starts off with the discovery of a dead body in Payatas, Manila. Two Jesuit priests, Father Juilliard and Father Gus Saenz are recruited by the Philippine National Bureau of Investigation to help solve the case.

The victim is identified as 14-year-old Barry Manalastas, and his autopsy reveals that he had been brutally murdered. The Bureau suspects a serial killer is on the loose and the priests are asked to help narrow down the list of suspects.

The priests conduct their own investigation, interviewing locals and gathering evidence from Barry’s schoolmates and family. They eventually conclude that there are three potential suspects with connections to Payatas: Anita Sarmiento, a streetwise teen; Genero Malimban, a mentally disturbed man; and Lolo Elias, an old man who has been living in the slum for years.
