Someone Knows My Name Summary
The novel begins with Aminata’s childhood in her village, where she learns to read and write from her mother and father, who are both Muslim scholars. However, when she is eleven years old, she is captured by slave traders and forced to walk for months to reach the coast, where she is put on a slave ship bound for America.
During the voyage, Aminata becomes friends with a boy named Chekura, who is also a slave. When they arrive in South Carolina, they are sold to different owners. Aminata is bought by a plantation owner named Appleby, who teaches her how to read and write and treats her relatively well. However, Aminata longs for freedom and is eventually sold to a cruel and abusive master named Robinson Appleby.
Aminata eventually escapes from Robinson and makes her way to New York, where she becomes involved in the abolitionist movement and helps other slaves escape to freedom. She also becomes a midwife and helps deliver babies for both white and black women.
