Eragon, a young farm boy, finds a blue stone in the mountains. He takes it home, not knowing its power. When he touches it, a dragon hatches from it. Eragon soon learns that he is now a Dragon Rider, one of the last in existence. The evil king Galbatorix killed all the other dragons and riders, except for a few who are in hiding. Eragon must now help the last dragon rider, Arya, defeat Galbatorix and restore peace to the land.
Eragon is taken to the city of Ellesméra where he meets Oromis, his new teacher. Oromis teaches him about magic and ancient language. Eragon also meets Glaedr, another dragon who is bonded to Oromis. Glaedr is hundreds of years old and is very wise. He helps Eragon to understand his power and to control it.
Eragon soon learns that he is not the only one with magical powers. There are others like him, called the elves. The elves have their own magic and they are very powerful. They live in the forest of Du Weldenvarden.

About the Author
Christopher Paolini is an American author who wrote the Inheritance Cycle, a fantasy series consisting of the books Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr, and Inheritance. He was born on November 17, 1983, in Southern California, and raised in the Paradise Valley area of Montana.
Paolini began writing the first book in the series, Eragon, when he was just 15 years old. He self-published the book in 2002, and it was later picked up by Knopf Books for Young Readers, a division of Random House. The book was adapted into a film in 2006, and Paolini went on to write three more books in the series.
His work has been compared to that of J.R.R. Tolkien and J.K. Rowling, and he has won numerous awards for his writing, including the 2005 Andre Norton Award for Best Young Adult Science Fiction or Fantasy Book (Eldest).
Paolini currently lives in Montana with his family. He is working on a new series, which is currently untitled. In an interview, he said that the new series will be “a little more grown-up” than the Inheritance Cycle, and will be set in “a different world with different rules.”
