About the Author

Norton Juster is an American architect and author, best known for his 1961 children’s fantasy novel The Phantom Tollbooth. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Juster studied architecture at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art.

The Phantom Tollbooth

After serving in the United States Air Force, he worked as an architect for several years before turning his attention to writing. In addition to The Phantom Tollbooth, Juster has written several other books, including The Dot and the Line: A Romance in Lower Mathematics (1963) and Alberic the Wise (1979).

He has also written several non-fiction books on architecture, such as The Street of Crocodiles (1986) and An Architect’s Alphabet (1991). Juster currently resides in Northampton, Massachusetts.

In an interview, Juster once said, “I’ve always believed that the right words sometimes can be as powerful as standard medicine. And sometimes they can be more powerful.” This quote perfectly encapsulates Juster’s belief in the power of language and its ability to heal, educate, and entertain.
