About the Author
John Steinbeck was an American author of twenty-seven books, including sixteen novels, six non-fiction books, and numerous short stories. He is widely known for the novel The Grapes of Wrath (1939), East of Eden (1952), and the novella Of Mice and Men (1937).
Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962 and, in 1964, he was presented with the United States Medal of Freedom by President Lyndon B. Johnson.
Steinbeck was born on February 27, 1902, in Salinas, California. His father, John Ernst Steinbeck, was the county treasurer and later a commissioner of agriculture for Monterey County. His mother, Olive Hamilton Steinbeck, a former schoolteacher, shared Steinbeck’s love of reading and writing.
Steinbeck’s paternal grandfather, Johann Adolf Großsteinbeck, converted from Catholicism to Lutheranism in the 1850s and changed the family name from “Großsteinbeck” to “Steinbeck.” The Steinbecks were of German, English, and Irish descent. With a variation of the spelling of the surname, they were related to John Steinbach, who settled in Pennsylvania in 1744.
