The Old Man and the Sea Summary

The Old Man and the Sea tell the story of an aged Cuban fisherman, Santiago, who has gone 84 days without catching a fish. He is now considered too old and weak to fish effectively, but he refuses to give up.

One day, he hooks a giant marlin that pulls his boat out to sea. After a long and grueling battle, Santiago finally defeats the fish, but it has taken all of his strength. He ties the marlin to his boat and sets off for home, but sharks begin to circle and soon devour the fish. Santiago arrives home with only the marlin’s skeleton remaining.

Despite his physical exhaustion and great loss, Santiago feels a sense of triumph. He has proven that he is still a good fisherman, even though he is old and weak.

The old man’s struggle against the fish represents a larger struggle against the forces of nature, which are ultimately stronger than any individual. Hemingway uses Santiago’s story to explore themes of heroism, courage, and determination in the face of adversity.
