Ernest Hemingway was an American author and journalist. His novel The Sun Also Rises was published in 1926. The book is about a group of American and British expatriates who travel from Paris to the Festival of San Fermin in Pamplona to watch the running of the bulls and the bullfights.
Hemingway was born in Oak Park, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. He went to high school there and then attended college at the nearby University of Missouri. He dropped out after a year and a half and moved to Kansas City to work as a reporter for The Kansas City Star.
In 1918, Hemingway was drafted into the army and sent to Italy as an ambulance driver. He was wounded while serving and spent several months in a hospital in Milan. After he was discharged from the hospital, he returned to the United States.
Hemingway then moved to Paris, where he became part of the expatriate community of writers and artists who lived there. He met his first wife, Hadley Richardson, in Paris. They were married in 1921 and had a son, Jack, who was born in 1923.
