The Wisdom of Insecurity: A Message for an Age of Anxiety PDF is a 1951 book by British philosopher Alan Watts. In it, he argues that the feeling of insecurity is actually a normal and essential part of human existence. He challenges the idea that security is something that can be achieved through material possessions or power, and instead claims that true security comes from within.

The book was met with both positive and negative reviews upon its release, with some critics praising Watts for his insights and others deeming his ideas as too simplistic. Nevertheless, it has remained popular in the years since its publication, selling over two million copies worldwide. It is available in paperback, ebook, and audio formats.

If you’re like most people, the word “security” conjures up images of money in the bank, a good job, and a comfortable home. But what if security is something entirely different? What if it has nothing to do with having more stuff or being in control?

The Wisdom of Insecurity Summary

The book starts by discussing the feeling of insecurity that many people experience in their lives. Watts argues that this feeling is caused by a lack of understanding of what life is truly about. He goes on to say that humans are constantly searching for security in their lives, but that this is an illusion.

Security does not exist in the world, and it is only an idea that we have created in our minds. Watts then goes on to discuss the various ways that humans try to find security, including religion, relationships, and material possessions.

He argues that none of these things can truly provide us with security and that we must learn to accept life as it is. only by doing this can we truly be free from the feeling of insecurity. The book is a detailed and insightful look at the human condition, and it provides valuable insights into the way we live our lives.

About the Author

Alan Watts was born in Chislehurst, Kent, on 6 January 1915. He lived in England until 1936, when he moved to the United States to study at Northwestern University in Illinois. After two years at Northwestern, he transferred to the American Academy of Asian Studies in San Francisco.

The Wisdom of Insecurity

Watts became interested in Eastern philosophy after reading The Mystics of the East by Paul Carus. He began to study Zen Buddhism and the Chinese Tao Te Ching, which led him to start writing about the similarities between Eastern and Western thought. In his book The Wisdom of Insecurity, Watts argues that the main difference between the two is that Eastern philosophy is more accepting of change and uncertainty.

In 1951, Watts moved to San Francisco, where he became a popular lecturer on Eastern philosophy and religion. He also wrote several books on the topic, including The Way of Zen (1957) and Tao: The Watercourse Way (1975).

In the 1960s, Watts became interested in psychedelics and their potential for expanding consciousness. He tried LSD and mescaline and wrote about his experiences in the book The Joyous Cosmology (1962).
