Biography- Mildred D. Taylor
Mildred D. Taylor, born on September 13, 1943, in Jackson, Mississippi, is an African-American writer and author of children’s literature. She is best known for her novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, which won the Newbery Medal in 1977.
Taylor’s family moved to Ohio when she was only three weeks old, and she grew up in Toledo, where her father worked as the head of the local branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Taylor attended the University of Toledo, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1965. She then went on to attend the University of Colorado, where she earned a Master of Arts degree in Journalism in 1973.
Taylor has written several novels and picture books, many of which explore the experiences of African Americans in the United States. Her books often draw on her own family history and personal experiences, as well as historical research. She has also written non-fiction works, including a memoir about her childhood called The Land, published in 2001.
In recognition of her contribution to children’s literature, Taylor has received numerous awards, including the Coretta Scott King Award and the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award. Plot Summary
