To the Lighthouse Summary
The book follows two families, the Ramsays and their guests, as they holiday on the Isle of Skye in Scotland between 1910 and 1920.
The Ramsays are a large family with eight children, led by their overbearing father, Mr. Ramsay. Mrs. Ramsay is a more gentle presence in the family, providing emotional support to her husband and children. The guests at Ramsay’s holiday home include Lily Briscoe, a young painter; Charles Tansley, a scholar who is Mr. Ramsay’s protégé; and Augustus Carmichael, an elderly poet.
The first section of the book, entitled “The Window,” focuses on Mrs. Ramsay’s dinner party preparations and the various conversations that take place among the guests. In “Time Passes,” the second section of the book, ten years have elapsed and World War I has begun. The Ramsays’ holiday home has been abandoned and is in a state of disrepair.

About the Author
Virginia Woolf was an English writer, considered one of the most important modernist 20th-century authors and also a pioneer in the use of stream of consciousness as a narrative device.
Born in London, Virginia Woolf was the daughter of Sir Leslie Stephen, editor of the Dictionary of National Biography, and Julia Prinsep Jackson. Her mother died when she was thirteen, an event that Woolf later documented in her first novel, The Voyage Out (1915). Woolf was educated by her father and then at two independent schools for girls: King’s College London and Queen’s College, London.
In 1897 she suffered her first mental breakdown and was briefly hospitalized. She recovered and began to write professionally. Her first novel, The Voyage Out, was published in 1915.
During World War I Woolf worked in a series of government offices, and in 1917 she married Leonard Woolf, a political thinker, and civil servant. They moved to Hogarth House in Richmond (now part of London), where they founded the Hogarth Press, which published works by T. S. Eliot, Katherine Mansfield, and other modernist writers.
